Low Tox Living: How to Support Your Healing Journey

Learn how to embrace low tox living on your healing journey without falling into fear or obsession. Sarah Phillipe shares a faith-based approach to detox.

Low Tox Living: How to Support Your Healing Journey

We live in an undeniably toxic world, but the fear of hidden chemicals can often become more draining than the toxins themselves. If you have ever felt a surge of panic in the cleaning aisle or stayed up late researching ingredients, it is time to trade that heavy burden for a posture of peace. In this episode, we explore how to navigate a healing journey that prioritizes wisdom and stewardship over the paralyzing search for perfection.

Moving Beyond the Fear of Environmental Toxins

The functional medicine world often highlights the reality of our environment: chemicals in our water, pollutants in our air, and endocrine disruptors in our skincare. While this science is real, the goal is not to achieve zero exposure, which is an impossible standard in a fallen world. Instead, the focus should be on building a resilient body that can handle what it encounters.

True stewardship is about opening your drainage pathways, supporting your liver, and keeping your nervous system out of a state of constant alarm. When we obsess over every minor exposure, we often create a physiological stress response that is just as taxing to our health as the toxins we are trying to avoid. Your body at peace is far better at processing toxins than a body trapped in a cycle of anxiety.

High Impact Swaps for Your Home

You do not need to overhaul your entire life in a single weekend. Stewardship is a process of making one wise choice at a time as your resources and energy allow. Focus on the exposures you encounter daily within your own home, as these are the ones that have a cumulative effect over time.

  • Drinking and Shower Water: A high-quality filter is one of the best investments you can make for your health. Filtering out chlorine, fluoride, and pharmaceutical runoff removes a massive daily burden from your liver.
  • Everyday Cookware: You do not have to toss every pan today, but as you need replacements, consider stainless steel or cast iron. Moving away from non-stick coatings reduces the chemicals released into your food and air.
  • Personal Care Products: Since your skin is your largest organ, what you apply to it matters. Look for cleaner alternatives for the products you use most often, like lotions, deodorants, and soaps.
  • Air Quality: Indoor air can be more concentrated with pollutants than outdoor air. Simply opening your windows or using a HEPA filter in your bedroom can significantly lighten the load on your lungs.

"Stewardship is doing what you can with what you have and then releasing the outcome. It is keeping health in its proper place: important, but not ultimate."

When Health Becomes an Idol

There is a subtle line between caring for the temple of the Holy Spirit and turning that temple into a god. If you find yourself spending hours researching products instead of resting, or feeling deep shame when you cannot control your environment, you may have swapped one burden for another. Health is a wonderful tool that allows us to serve God and love our families, but it is not our source of security.

Christ has already made you whole and worthy. No water filter or organic diet can add to the finished work on the cross. When we keep our eyes on the One who dwells within the temple, we can make changes from a place of love rather than fear. Your body was designed with extraordinary systems to heal and eliminate waste. Your job is to support those systems and trust the Designer with the rest.

If you are feeling overwhelmed and unsure where your body needs the most support, I invite you to take my free Toxic Load Assessment. It will help you identify which systems are asking for help and give you a clear map for your next steps. Let's choose wisdom today, one swap at a time, and leave the obsession behind.
