Cycle Charting: The Fifth Vital Sign and Hormonal Health
Learn how cycle charting acts as a fifth vital sign to reveal root cause issues like PCOS and endometriosis, offering a path to healing without the pill.

Many women are taught to accept painful periods and heavy bleeding as an inevitable part of their design, yet these symptoms are often the body's way of communicating deeper imbalances. When we ignore these signals or mask them with hormonal birth control, we miss the opportunity to address the underlying stressors affecting our thyroid, blood sugar, and nutrient status. In this episode, Cristy Murray explains why your menstrual cycle is actually your fifth vital sign and how tracking it can lead you toward genuine, root-cause healing.
Understanding the Fifth Vital Sign
Most of us are familiar with the standard vital signs: blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and respiration. However, for women of childbearing age, there is a fifth vital sign that offers a monthly report card on internal health. The menstrual cycle provides real-time data on how your body is responding to stress, how well your thyroid is functioning, and whether your inflammation levels are trending high.
In conventional medicine, the standard response to cycle irregularity is often a prescription for the pill. While this may quiet the symptoms, it frequently masks the underlying issues. When a woman eventually decides to stop hormonal birth control, the original drivers—whether they be PCOS, endometriosis, or nutrient deficiencies—are often still there, sometimes further complicated by years of suppressed ovarian function.
Why Cycle Charting Matters for Root Cause Healing
Cycle charting is not just about tracking the days on a calendar; it is about observing specific biomarkers that reveal what is happening with your hormones. Methods like the Creighton Model focus on cervical mucus as a primary indicator of estrogen levels and ovulation timing. This level of detail is critical because the assumption that every woman ovulates on day 14 of a 28-day cycle is often incorrect.
By identifying your specific peak day of fertility, you can time laboratory testing with surgical precision. Instead of a generic day 21 progesterone draw that might miss your actual window, you can test when it matters most for your unique bioindividuality. This data helps distinguish between a true hormonal deficiency and a simple timing error in testing.
"Your symptoms are information, not a design flaw. They are the body’s way of asking for support."
Identifying Inflammatory Drivers
When a cycle is consistently painful or heavy, it serves as a red flag for systemic inflammation. Conditions like endometriosis are profoundly inflammatory, often requiring us to look beyond the reproductive system to find the source. This might include investigating:
- Xenoestrogens found in plastics and personal care products.
- Environmental toxins and household cleaning chemicals.
- Dietary triggers that spike blood sugar and fuel gut dysbiosis.
- Chronic stress that depletes progesterone, our natural calming hormone.
A Restorative Approach to Hormonal Health
Healing is rarely about finding a different kind of Band-Aid, even a natural one. It is about restoring the body to its intended function. This requires a shift in perspective: seeing your body as a system designed to be understood and stewarded rather than overridden.
When we begin to treat our cycles as vital signs, we stop fighting against our biology and start working with it. Whether you are struggling with infertility, PMS, or irregular cycles, the goal is to listen to the clues your body provides and address the burdens—toxic, physical, and emotional—that are standing in the way of your wellness.
If you have been told that your symptoms are just the cost of being a woman, let this be your invitation to look deeper. Your body was made for more than just survival; it was made for wholeness in Christ. By understanding the language of your cycle, you can begin the journey toward true, sustainable restoration.
