Breast Implant Illness: My Personal Healing Journey
Sarah Phillipe shares her personal healing journey with breast implant illness, uncovering why surgery wasn't the finish line and how she found true root cause recovery.

For years, I was known primarily as the girl with breast implant illness. It was the catalyst God used to wake me up, bring me to my knees, and eventually shift my entire life’s work toward helping other women navigate their own healing journey. If you have ever wondered if a foreign object in your body could be fueling your chronic symptoms, I want to share the honest truth about what it took for me to finally get well.
The Identity Crisis Behind the Procedure
Long before I ever stepped foot into a plastic surgeon's office, seeds were planted about what it meant to be a woman. I remember a specific moment in childhood where a family member joked that I would surely inherit the large chest typical of our lineage. When I didn't, the silence felt like a missing piece of my worth.
In my late twenties, I fell into the trap of aesthetic perfectionism. I was a nurse, I was into bodybuilding, and I was strictly controlled. I thought that if I could just fix that one physical flaw, I would finally embody my full identity. I didn't realize then that I was building my worth on an unreliable narrator: my own reflection. When I finally got the implants, I expected to feel complete. Instead, I woke up feeling like my body wasn't truly mine anymore.
When the Healing Journey Becomes Complicated
Within six months of my augmentation, the unraveling began. It started with hair loss and being cold to the bone, but it quickly spiraled into a long list of symptoms that conventional medicine couldn't explain. I dealt with cystic acne, debilitating anxiety, and a strange mental hyper-awareness of every breath I took. My nervous system was so fragile that I could barely tolerate the sound of my husband breathing next to me.
I spent years playing whack-a-mole with my health. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's, SIBO, and eventually Lyme disease. I tried every protocol under the sun, spending thousands of dollars every month on supplements and practitioners. While some things helped, I was still stuck in a cycle of chronic illness. I had this nagging intuition that my implants were the problem, but I was terrified to lose the image I had paid so much to create.
"No surgery, no procedure, and no external change can fill an internal need. That is not what our bodies are for."
Why Explant Surgery Was Not the Finish Line
Many women believe that removing the implants—the explant—will be the magical moment where all symptoms vanish. For some, there is an immediate lift, but for me, it was just the beginning of the real work. The implants were the straw that broke the camel's back, but my body had a lifetime of other burdens to process: a history of processed foods, years of night shifts as a nurse, and the silent fire of stage four endometriosis.
Healing required a multi-therapeutic approach. I had to undergo an intensive eight-hour surgery for endometriosis and then spend years focused on the foundations. We cannot expect the body to bounce back instantly when it has been in a state of high alert for years. I had to learn how to support my drainage pathways, regulate my nervous system, and address the stealth pathogens that had taken up residence while my immune system was distracted by the silicone.
Moving Toward True Stewardship
Today, I don't look back on those years with regret. God used that brokenness to dismantle the false identity I had built and replace it with a deep dependence on Him. He turned my pain into a purpose that now allows me to advocate for other women who feel unseen by the medical system.
If you are currently struggling with your health and suspect your implants are involved, please know that you aren't crazy. Your body is not betraying you; it is speaking to you. The path forward isn't found in a faster or more aggressive protocol. It is found in the slow, gentle, and foundational work of stewardship.
If this story resonates with you, I invite you to take the first step by assessing your own toxic load. Understanding which systems need support is the bridge between where you are now and the vibrant health God designed you for. You can listen to the full episode above for more details on my recovery and the specific steps I took to get my life back.
