Healing Journey: Biblical Nervous System Regulation
Is your healing journey centered on Christ or yourself? Discover the difference between secular nervous system regulation and biblical stewardship for chronic illness.

The wellness industry is currently enamored with the nervous system, promising that you possess the inner power to heal yourself if you just try hard enough. While your body is indeed fearfully and wonderfully made with an innate capacity for repair, the source of that power matters more than the practice itself. In this episode, we explore how to navigate your healing journey with discernment, separating the physiological gift of regulation from the spiritual trap of self-worship.
The Four Truths of a Biblical Healing Journey
Most of the confusion in the modern wellness space comes from holding one truth while dropping the others. To stay grounded, we must hold four specific realities in tension. First, God designed your body with the capacity to heal; skin closes over a cut and bones reknit because He wove homeostasis into our design. Second, we live in fallen bodies in a fallen world, meaning perfect wholeness is a resurrection promise rather than a protocol guarantee.
Third, all healing comes from God, regardless of whether He uses a supplement, a surgery, or a breath practice as the tool. Finally, we must give credit to the Creator rather than the creation. When we move these truths out of alignment, we risk turning stewardship into sourcing, where we mistakenly believe we are the ones doing the work of the Divine.
"The vagus nerve does not check your theology before responding to a long exhale, but the source of your practice determines the fruit of your soul."
Discerning the Source of Regulation
Nervous system regulation is a physiological reality. Your body moves between a sympathetic state of alertness and a parasympathetic state of rest. When you are navigating chronic illness, your system often gets stuck in a state of high alert due to toxins, infections, or trauma. Tools like slow exhales, humming, or grounding send a signal that the threat has passed, allowing the body to prioritize repair.
However, the tools themselves are neutral; the orientation of your heart is not. There is a spectrum in the wellness world today. On one end, practitioners use somatic tools to steward the body while keeping Christ as the source. In the middle, God is often replaced by terms like inner wisdom or true self. At the far end, you find teachings that claim your consciousness manifests reality, essentially positioning you as the creator. Discernment is not about avoiding the tools, but about ensuring the tools lead you toward communion with God rather than independence from Him.
Five Questions for Spiritual Discernment
If you are evaluating a new program, practitioner, or somatic practice, consider these questions to ensure your approach remains biblically sound:
- Who is the source of healing? Does the framework point to Christ, or does it rely on your consciousness, innate intelligence, or the field?
- Where does the credit go? In testimonials and teaching, is the modality the hero, or is God glorified as the one who allowed the body to settle?
- Does this deepen or replace your dependence on Christ? A practice should be a doorway to His presence, not a substitute for the Word and prayer.
- Is Scripture invited in or reframed? Watch for verses being twisted to support self-deification, such as changing "know that I am God" to "know that you are God."
- Would Jesus be a welcome guest? If his name feels like an awkward interruption to the practice, that practice may not be for you.
Practicing Regulation with Christ at the Center
Christ-centered regulation does not necessarily require a different set of physical tools, but it requires a different posture. Instead of a generic body scan, you might practice breath prayer, inhaling "Be still" and exhaling "and know that You are God." Instead of manifesting a future version of yourself, you can meditate on the living Word and allow the Spirit to restore your soul.
"You are not the healer, and that is the best news your tired, striving, chronically ill body has ever heard."
When we stop trying to be our own source, the pressure to perform our way into health finally lifts. You were never meant to carry the burden of your own restoration. By focusing on the root causes of your symptoms while remaining rooted in Christ, you can steward your health without losing your soul to the altars of self-healing.
If you are ready to stop guessing and start addressing the physiological burdens your body is carrying, I invite you to take the free toxic load assessment. It is a practical first step in understanding what your nervous system is actually reacting to.
