My Approach To
MVX Plus: A Deeper Look at Cellular Health, Longevity, and Where to Begin
If you have been working hard on your health and still feel depleted, another list of symptoms may not always tell us where to start. The Metabolic Vulnerability Index (MVX Plus) is a blood test I use to look at the bigger picture underneath your symptoms: inflammation, nourishment, and how well your cells are making energy. Here is how I use it to decide on next steps, adjust interventions, and track whether your body is truly moving in the right direction.
"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." — Psalm 139:14

Why I Added MVX Plus to My Practice
I have spent years walking with women who did everything they were told. They cleaned up their diets, bought the supplements, and saw the specialists. They still carried a heaviness they couldn't pinpoint. What I kept running into was that symptoms and standard lab ranges told me very little about how much her body was carrying or how much capacity she had left to heal.
That is the gap MVX Plus fills for me. It gives me a measurable view of the metabolic and inflammatory strain on the body, and it does it with a single blood draw. I use it the way I use a good map. It gives us a baseline, a good starting point, and it something we can continue to track while we work through our roadmap back to health.
Someone who has been exhausted for years deserves more than a hopeful guess about whether his/her plan is working.
Moving From Managing Symptoms to Restoring Function
Most health care is organized around disease, symptoms, risk factors, and pathology. We name the condition, treat the symptoms, and monitor the risk factors. There is a place for that, and I am grateful for it. But it is largely a conversation about what has already gone wrong and doesn't answer the question about "why" it's happening.
The framework behind MVX Plus shifts the focus to the cell. Every tissue in your body runs on energy made in the mitochondria. When that energy production is strained by infection, inflammation, toxic exposures, or nutrient deficiencies, every system downstream feels it, and symptoms follow. The same underlying stress can show up as fatigue in one person, a thyroid problem in another, and brain fog or pain in the next.
The principle I practice from is that a body whose cells are producing energy at full function has what it needs to repair itself, and disease has a very hard time taking hold. The more we restore function, the less room there is for dysfunction. I share that as the clinical philosophy I work from, and no test result can promise a particular outcome. It does change what I aim at. Instead of chasing each symptom, I ask what is draining this body, and what it needs in order to make energy again.

When your labs look fine and you feel anything but fine.
Many of the clients work with have been told their lab results are normal. Yet they are exhausted, foggy, inflamed, and quietly worried about their long-term health. A test that looks at cellular stress and energy metabolism gives us a place to start that goes beyond guessing.
How MVX Plus Guides Me: Deeper Testing or Start Protocols Now
One of the most practical things MVX Plus does for me is help with sequencing. Functional medicine can turn into test after test after test, and many clients of min arrive already burnt out and over-tested. The pattern in the MVX scores helps me decide whether we need to dig deeper first or whether we can begin supporting the body right away.
When the scores and the individual markers point to a clear pattern, and it fits your history, we can often move into a foundational plan sooner without piling on more testing. When the picture raises questions, such as a strong inflammatory signal that points to nutrient depletion, chronic infections, or toxicity, we know where a deeper look is worth the investment, whether that is gut, hidden infection, toxic exposure, hormones, or nutrient status.
That keeps your time, energy, and budget pointed in the right direction. It also protects a body that cannot handle aggressive protocols yet. Matching the pace of the plan to your capacity is a core part of how I work.
The Five Factors of Cellular Health
When I look at MVX Plus, I am asking how much strain these five factors are placing on the cell and how that is showing up in the body. They work together, and each one can drive the others.
- Infection: Ongoing pathogen load, whether hidden gut, tick-borne, viral, or other microbes, asks your immune system and your mitochondria to work overtime. A strong inflammatory pattern prompts me to ask where an infection could be contributing.
- Inflammation: Chronic, low-grade inflammation is expensive for the body to maintain. The inflammatory markers in MVX Plus give me a window into how much of your energy is being spent keeping that fire burning.
- Toxicity: Heavy metals, mold, chemicals, and other exposures interfere with how mitochondria make energy. When the pattern fits your history, it nudges me to look at your past and present exposures and your drainage pathways.
- Malnutrition: You can eat well and still be under-nourished at the cellular level if you are not digesting, absorbing, or utilizing nutrients. The amino acid and citrate markers help me think about how well your cells are fueled.
- Mitochondrial dysfunction: This is where the other four converge. When the mitochondria are strained, energy drops and every symptom gets louder. Restoring mitochondrial function is the central aim of the work.
Measure, Adjust, and Track Your Progress
A plan without feedback is mostly hope. MVX Plus gives me a way to measure where you are starting, guide the first steps, and then track what is changing as we work.
At the outset, your scores and individual markers show me which areas to prioritize. As the plan unfolds, a repeat test lets us compare against your own baseline. If the numbers are moving in the right direction alongside how you feel, we keep going. If they are not, I have a prompt to adjust, whether that means changing a protocol, slowing down, or looking for a hidden barrier we missed.
Hidden barriers are common. You may be doing everything right and still stall because of something underneath, such as a stealth infection, an unaddressed exposure, or a drainage pathway that cannot keep up. A stalled or stubborn pattern is often the first clue that something has not yet been uncovered.
MVX Plus and Longevity
Longevity is more than adding years. It is having the energy and strength to live fully for as many of those years as possible. In my experience, the cell is where that starts, and MVX Plus is the most useful longevity-focused test I have found for looking at it.
The Metabolic Vulnerability Index was developed by researchers at Labcorp and published studies have linked higher scores with higher long-term mortality risk across several large groups of adults. For me, that makes it a meaningful marker for the work I do. If a score reflects strain on the body, then lowering that strain is a worthy goal, and a repeat test helps us see whether our efforts are taking us in that direction.
I would never hand you a number and call it your destiny. I use it as a compass that tells us whether our efforts to build resilience, reduce the burden, and support the cell are headed the right way.
What I Want You to Hear
Your body is not failing you. It is carrying a load, and it is asking for the right kind of help. Information about what is happening at the cellular level can bring relief, because it validates your experience and gives us a direction.
I believe we were designed to heal when the obstacles are removed and the body is given what it needs. MVX Plus helps me see more clearly which obstacles to address first, so that we steward your health with wisdom and not with guesswork.

Frequently asked questions
What is the MVX Plus test?
MVX Plus is the Metabolic Vulnerability Index test offered through Labcorp. It uses NMR technology to measure six markers in your blood (GlycA, small HDL particles, citrate, valine, leucine and isoleucine) and reports an overall MVX score along with an inflammation score (IVX) and a metabolic malnutrition score (MMX). The Plus version also shows the individual marker results.
How do you use the results?
I look at your scores and individual markers alongside your history, symptoms, and other findings. They help me decide what to prioritize, whether deeper testing makes sense or we can start foundational support right away, and how to pace the plan to your capacity. A repeat test later lets us compare against your own baseline.
Does MVX Plus diagnose infection, toxicity, or a mitochondrial disorder?
No. It does not identify a specific organism, toxin, or diagnosis. It shows the pattern of strain on the body, and that pattern helps me decide where to look next. Targeted testing is used when your history calls for it.
Is this a longevity test?
Published studies have linked higher MVX scores with higher long-term mortality risk, and I consider it the most useful longevity-focused test I have found. It is a risk and resilience marker, and no result is a prediction of your lifespan.
Do I need to fast for the test?
Labcorp prefers a fasting sample, usually 10 to 12 hours. You will receive instructions with your order. Please do not stop prescribed medications or fast in a way that is unsafe for you.
How soon will I get results?
Labcorp typically releases results within a few days after your sample is collected. We review them together during your 30-minute consultation.
Does this replace medical care?
No. This service is educational and wellness focused. It does not diagnose or treat disease, and it does not replace care from your licensed healthcare provider. MVX Plus is a laboratory-developed test that has not been cleared or approved by the FDA.
