My Approach To
Leaky Gut: The Root-Cause Story Behind Almost Every Symptom You're Chasing
Leaky gut isn't a trendy buzzword — it's one of the most underdiagnosed drivers of chronic illness in women. Bloating, food sensitivities, brain fog, skin flares, autoimmunity, anxiety, hormone chaos — they so often trace back to a gut lining that's been quietly inflamed for years. Here's how I actually think about leaky gut, why most 'gut healing' protocols don't work, and the order of operations that does.
"He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave." — Psalm 107:20

First, a little of my own story
For years, my gut was running my life and I didn't even know it. I'd eat and feel like I was nine months pregnant. I reacted to foods I'd eaten my whole life. My skin would flare for no reason. I was anxious, foggy, and exhausted — and every doctor told me my labs were fine and maybe I should try probiotics or fiber.
What no one told me was that the lining of my gut — the very barrier designed to decide what got into my bloodstream and what didn't — had been quietly inflamed and leaky for years. Stress, antibiotics, birth control, processed food, breast implants, hidden infections, and a body that never felt safe enough to rest had slowly worn that barrier down.
When I finally stopped chasing the symptoms and started restoring the terrain — in the right order — my gut changed, and so did everything downstream of it. My energy came back. My skin cleared. My cycle regulated. My mind quieted. The gut really is where so much of this starts.
Why Most 'Gut Healing' Plans Don't Work
Conventional medicine still largely dismisses leaky gut as a fringe concept, even though intestinal permeability is well-documented in the research literature. So women are told their bloating is IBS, their flares are stress, their sensitivities are anxiety — and handed an acid blocker or an antidepressant.
On the other end of the spectrum, the wellness world has reduced leaky gut to a marketing slogan. Buy this powder. Drink this broth. Take this glutamine. Do this 21-day reset. But you can drink bone broth every day for a year and not heal a leaky gut if the things tearing the lining down — chronic stress, hidden infections, blood sugar swings, toxic load, mineral depletion — are never addressed.
Leaky gut is rarely the root. It's the consequence. And until we address what is keeping the lining inflamed and permeable, no supplement protocol on earth will hold.

You didn't suddenly become "sensitive to everything." Your gut lining lost its seal.
The random food reactions, the skin flares with no obvious trigger, the anxiety that shows up an hour after a meal, the low-grade unwell feeling that follows you around — that's not in your head. That's a barrier that's been quietly compromised, letting things into your bloodstream that were never meant to be there.
How My Approach Is Different
I don't address leaky gut as a stand-alone diagnosis with a stand-alone protocol. I approach it as a downstream signal that the body's terrain is overwhelmed — and we work upstream from there.
We don't start by throwing glutamine, collagen, and a dozen probiotics at the gut lining. We start by asking what has been keeping it inflamed in the first place. Is the nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight? Are drainage pathways backed up? Is there a stealth infection — parasites, candida, SIBO, H. pylori — quietly feeding the dysfunction? Are minerals tanked? Is the diet inadvertently re-injuring the lining every day?
Only once those drivers are addressed do we layer in the lining-rebuilding work. Done in that order, the gut actually heals — and stays healed.
The Order That Actually Restores the Gut Lining
Most women have tried 'gut healing' three or four times already and ended up frustrated. That's because they were sold the last step as the whole plan. Here's how I sequence the real work:
- Regulate the nervous system first — a body stuck in fight-or-flight shuts down digestion, lowers stomach acid, weakens tight junctions, and keeps the lining inflamed no matter what supplements you take.
- Open drainage pathways (bowels, liver, lymph, kidneys, skin) so the body has somewhere to put what we're about to stir up.
- Stabilize blood sugar and minerals so the gut has the raw materials and steady fuel it needs to rebuild.
- Address stealth infections and dysbiosis — parasites, candida, SIBO, H. pylori, biofilms — with paced pathogen work and gentle cellular detox running alongside.
- Layer in more intentional cellular detox once the major pathogen load is calmed, so stored toxins and metabolic byproducts can finally clear.
- Restore the gut terrain — rebuild the lining, repopulate beneficial flora, and reintroduce foods with intention.
- Make gut-supportive living a lifestyle — meal rhythm, food quality, stress regulation, sleep, and seasonal resets — not a one-time protocol.
What I Want You to Hear
If you've been told your gut is fine but you feel anything but, please trust your body. Leaky gut is real, and it is at the root of far more than digestion. It is often the quiet driver behind the symptoms you've been told to live with.
You are not broken. Your gut is not broken. It has been doing its best with the load it's been carrying, and it will respond — beautifully — when you finally give it what it actually needs in the order it needs it.
Your body was knit together with intention. The gut lining renews itself every few days. That is not an accident — it is design. With the right roadmap and the right pace, healing is not only possible, it is the most natural thing your body knows how to do.

Frequently asked questions
What is leaky gut?
Leaky gut — clinically called increased intestinal permeability — is when the tight junctions of the gut lining become loose, allowing undigested food particles, microbes, and toxins to pass into the bloodstream that aren't meant to. This triggers chronic immune activation and inflammation, which shows up as everything from bloating and skin issues to brain fog, autoimmunity, and hormone imbalance.
How do I know if I have leaky gut?
Symptoms are the loudest signal — bloating, food sensitivities, brain fog, fatigue after eating, skin flares, autoimmunity, anxiety, hormone issues, and frequent illness. Functional testing (like zonulin, stool analysis, organic acids, and food sensitivity panels) can confirm what the body is already telling you. In practice, if you have chronic symptoms and a stressed life, gut permeability is almost always part of the picture.
Can L-glutamine, bone broth, and probiotics heal leaky gut?
They can support the gut lining, but they cannot heal it on their own if the upstream drivers — nervous system dysregulation, infections, toxic load, mineral depletion, blood sugar swings — are still active. Think of those products as building materials. Without first removing what's tearing the wall down, you'll be patching the same hole forever.
How long does it take to heal leaky gut?
The lining itself turns over every few days, but truly restoring the terrain typically takes 3–12 months of consistent, well-sequenced work, depending on how long the gut has been struggling and how many root drivers are in play. Most women feel meaningful shifts in bloating, energy, and clarity within the first weeks once the foundations are in place.
Is leaky gut connected to autoimmunity?
Yes — strongly. The current research is clear that intestinal permeability is one of the three prerequisites for autoimmune disease, alongside genetic predisposition and an environmental trigger. Healing the gut lining is foundational for calming autoimmunity, including Hashimoto's, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, MS, and others.
